The Spiral of Life (Triskelion) is one of the most complex symbols to decipher. Its symbolic significance depends on the era / culture it is embedded in. The three spirals, interconnected with no open ends, turn in the same direction. When drawn in one continuous line, it is said to represent the continuous movement of time. It is found on many ancient carvings. Carvings at Newgrange, Ireland, date back to 2500 BC. It is carved into the rock at the main entrance and inside the chamber. Newgrange is known for the illumination of its chamber by the Winter solstice sun. Morning sunlight travels up the passageway, illuminating the entire chamber as the sun rises. |
